July 23, 2026 – The City of Fredericksburg is continuing to make more energy efficient progress within the city through its conversion of overhead streetlights to LED light fixtures. Earlier projects involved the conversion of 95 lights in the Mayfield neighborhood that was completed in fall 2024 and another 82 lights in the Central Park area in late summer 2025.
Dominion Energy replaces the high-intensity-discharge (HID) bulbs for the equivalent watt LEDs. LED bulbs have longer lifespans than high-pressure-sodium bulbs and are replaced less often. They are also more efficient at converting electricity into light, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs.
By switching to LEDs, the City is reducing its carbon dioxide emissions. The two earlier conversions will generate $15,800 in yearly electricity savings following a payback period of roughly 21 months.
The LED Streetlight Conversion Plan presents the areas in which conversion had already been completed, those that are in process, and the upcoming areas for FY 2027. City Council approved $70,000 for FY 2026 to continue the transition of streetlights to LEDs and $150,000 for FY 2027.
Dominion Energy is currently working on the areas funded under the FY26 budget, which should be converted by the end of 2026. This phase will involve the conversion of approximately 257 lights. It is anticipated that the areas identified for FY27 should be converted by mid-summer of 2027. This last endeavor will involve the conversion of approximately 1,021 lights.
By mid-2027, all streetlights along City-maintained roads should be converted to LED lights. This work advances City Council’s aggressive stated goal of being carbon free for municipal operations by 2035.
