The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team is on to the Coast-to-Coast Conference championship game for the first time since 2022 after taking down Santa Cruz, 2-0, on Friday evening in Newport News, Va.
The Eagles used a pair of Katie Britton goals and four Emily Orn saves in net to advance past the Banana Slugs. Britton scored the Eagles' first goal in the 13' on a line drive from outside of the box on clearance of a corner kick. Then, just four minutes later, Britton added UMW's second goal on a long shot that glanced off of a CNU defender's left side and into the back of the net.
Orn came up with her first save in the 42' as UMW took a 2-0 lead into the break. Coming out of halftime, the Eagles eased up on the offensive pressure as they only took four shots, but the defense was as staunch as it's been all year. The Banana Slugs took five shots in the second half with three of them saved by Orn as she saved shots in the 57', 74', and 78'.
For the game, UMW took 11 shots with six on goal, while Santa Cruz took six total shots with four on goal. Santa Cruz led in corners with two, while UMW had one.
The Eagles are back in action for the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference championship game on Sunday against Christopher Newport. First touch in Newport News, Va. is set for 12 p.m.
