The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team drew with Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon, 0-0, at Roy Gordon Field in Fredericksburg, Va.
It was as even as a matchup could get as the Eagles edged the Hornets by a single shot, 12-11, and by two on shots on goal, 5-3. UMW had a few good chances in the first half when Katie Britton's attempt was saved by the Lynchburg keeper in the 30' before Layla Royster had one of her own saved a minute later.
Royster had another great chance with just 45 seconds to go in the first half as the junior forward headed a ball on target toward the net, but a Lynchburg defender was able to kick the ball away to record a team save for the Hornets.
In the second half, the Eagles had another pair of good looks for a goal in the 75', but both were saved by great plays from the Lynchburg keeper. Olivia Ewing had the first chance as she dribbled from left to right in the box as she ripped a shot with her left foot at the keeper before a diving attempt saved a UMW goal. Then on the rebound, Royster had an open look in front of the goal but, after a quick recovery from the Hornet keeper, she was able to come away with another diving stop and keep UMW off the board.
Keeper Emily Orn came away with three saves on the afternoon as she helped UMW to another draw and moved the Eagles' record to 8-1-3 this season.
UMW is back in action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Southern Virginia at the Turf Stadium in Fredericksburg, Va.
