The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team used Braeden Kelly's hat trick and goals from six other Eagles to down Regent on Tuesday evening, 9-3, in Fredericksburg, Va. For UMW, it was the most goals in a game since the 2022 season.
The Eagles started off the match quickly in the 6th minute when Elliot Berg and Michael Lenhard found John Maggio in the box for the first-year's first career goal to put UMW up early, 1-0. In the 15th minute, UMW notched its second goal after Luis Argueta kicked the ball from the defensive zone and found a streaking Berg, who put the ball into the net to increase the lead to two.
The Royals notched their first goal of the night in the 21st minute, but UMW countered with another in the 28th minute as Sean Lowry found Gerrard Valoyi, who put the third Eagles score in the back of the net for his third of the season. The Eagles added two more goals before the half concluded as Dylan Pham was able to find an open Kelly for his first goal of the evening to add on to the lead, 4-1, in the 41st minute. Then in the 45th minute, Micah Davis booted a ball that skipped off a Regent defender's leg and into the back of the net to add another just 30 seconds before halftime to make it 5-1.
UMW started the second half off as quickly as possible, as just 12 seconds into the half, Andrew Brittain took the ball after receiving the kickoff to the Regent box before finding Kelly for his second goal of the evening to add to the lead, 6-1.
The Royals netted another goal in the 57th minute, but UMW responded with its seventh score of the night as Ronan Quigley found Brittain in the box to add another goal to the Eagles' total in the 63rd minute. After a Regent turnover, Quigley passed the ball to Brittain, who then found an open Kelly, who notched his third score of the night and added to the lead, 8-2. Finally, the Eagles capped off the big night as Daniel Calderon and Quigley teamed up to get the ball to Rutley Heniemann for Heinemann's first goal of the season, 9-2, in the 68th minute.
Regent added another goal in the 85th minute to cut into the gap, 9-3.
The Eagles controlled possession for virtually the entire evening as they took 35 shots (17 on goal), while Regent had five total shots, three of which were on goal. UMW led in corners, 5-3.
